Little Edy

If you've seen Grey Gardens, the cult documentary about Jackie O's eccentric cousins, the Bouviers, then you know Little Edy. And if you know little Edy, you might be able to guess what my cousin Nan is like. Last week she had brain surgery to remove a tumor, and she came back from the hospital wearing a little nylon hat. "it's a little french cloche, from the twenties," she said, looking at herself in the mirror happily. "I think I'm going to want more of these for summer."

The Birthday Party

Who knew that Shakers used to sing wild, gesticulating shape note songs? My cousin Nanny had her 65th recently, and a bunch of modern-day Vermonters came to regale her with songs of yore.

April, Midcoast Maine

Allan works out of a half-trailer, fixing cars on his friend's property. His friend just so happens to have a barn full of antique tractors, plows and furrows, plus a couple of fiesty cocker spaniels and enough junk to get any antique hunter pretty worked up. All in a mud-season setting.
